it was like the opposite of a flood -
first there, and then not.

it had to have been the heat - so hot.
so hot,
but hardly unexpected.
/
every corner, manned, womaned, hungry.
well, starving…
but resigned not to eat.
/
too proud.
too much pressure.
/
heat and pressure - a lethal combination.
people have been known to disappear.
/
and we almost didn’t notice the steam.
/
white vapour, in thin ribbons at first, giving way to milky clouds.
black and then white - right before our eyes.
an alchemical certainty that no one wanted to believe.
/
ya. it must have been the heat.
